Hey Chris,
I bumped into Mark when he was here in the Philippines. Handed him a couple tiny calling cards. Hope he gets to hand one to you. He said he'd probably see you next week. I might drop by December, maybe we can kick it then.

Happy Friday Chris,
It's Donato's foster daughter...he adopted her when she was 13 and now she's a bright 20 year old interning with Tarina. Really wonderful.

Hope you and the lovely lady are well! x

discarded winning memories...
was funny walking onto the campus of a high school during the summer. it was basically empty 'cept for the swim meet people ... and ... some trophies ...

about the people who did something to win these trophies which were now so easily discarded. i first thought they could be recycled but ... i'm sure at least some people, now, probably, having moved on, were very excited to have won.

there were a of couple old couches as well but they were not ... pictorially interesting.

nor were the new air conditioning units.

m was ready to race but ... i don't know how much the organizer would appreciate a spaniel in the water.

i know i'm going to hell ... but ... they didn't have the doritos-relay this day. ;)

i'm sure there would have been plenty of punters to be sure.

i know.

going.

to.

hell.

at least i'll have friends there already.

yep. that's b. she won all four of her events.

by a long-ass margin.

checking out her seed time against her ... whatever-time.

the only sports i like are polo, golf, tennis, european soccer and bull riding.

the pussies in mexico and spain kill the fucker; they don't try and ride 'em. and the french ... they jump over them.

yeah, ride those bitches ... see how ya' feel afterwards. ;)

not that i've ever ... wait ... i may have gone to a rodeo and seen bulls being ridden.

this older guy read this story like three or four times.

i blame mortgage brokers (especially the ones in orange county and calabasas) for the current meltdown. if they could have just bought one fucking hummer and only one set of fake tits (for their wife and not their girlfriend) ... we'd all be better off.

which now brings me to finland, although i'm sure it's part of sweden, as much as i like suzi i was on dA checking out V6. very well done, actually. anyway ... the message centre looks totally different. so ... i'm reading a few of the journals posted by some of the 100 or so people i watch when i saw a recent entry from jenni aka suzi9mm. then i read more and saw another journal... where she said:

"Cuba. unlike any other, really, im sure u know how. while you feel like youre in a movie, when everything you see is from the 40's or 50's, the people are well educated and have free, high level healthcare. i bet most americans dont know that the embargoed Cuban gets better healthcare than they do, unless the american has lots of money. but being from a socialist-democratic country myself, i appreciate that everyone is taken care of, and was amazed at how well it worked in there. but Fidel is a romantic and that showed too. so its not perfect. but how would they do without the embargo, better or worse than neighbors? i would love to know, really, and so would they. i think Obama has said that if chosen as a president, he would open a dialogue with Cuban lead. might be about time. its not like Cuba is in any way a threat to the US, or anyone else. the people were really friendly and in general i enjoyed my time. its not s shopping paradise as the shops are empty, more like if your interested in culture and people, or even the beach, they have those. but the food is bad, i have to say, just like the travel book threatened...the food...oh dear. well, they are lacking many basic supplies. if you are heading to Cuba though, book your room from CasaVera, its a homestay near the center, and it really made up at least 50% of my trip being so good. the host couple is great and you feel welcomed. they speak english, russian, italian and some finnish and whatnot. good people. AND, they do make the best cuban food there is."

um, love, do you realize that your social democratic country as like 5.2M people? that's almost half of what we have just in los angeles county. um ... i don't think your model of one of the highest tax rates on the planet would really work in a much much much larger population.

not only, but ... cuba having better health care? are you kidding me? please cite your specific examples of how cuban medical schools are better than those at san francisco university medical school or perhaps harvard or johns hopkins.

yes, cuba is, in fact, the place i'd love to have a brain tumor removed.

for sure.

seriously, when i hear people talk shit about a place they really don't know -- or have even been queered in their thinking by canadians -- it pisses me off.

it's funny how many europeans have totally glomed on to that "change" mantra propogated by obama. the truth is ... no one really knows what will happen when obama gets elected.

the only good candidate was ron paul. fyi.

anyway ... i'm sorry ... when people compare their own systems of democracy given the fact they have a smaller gdp than a single county in america ... it just pisses me off.

sorry, jenni. ;)

i'm sure your legions of emo-kids will leave shitty comments. ;)

we saw this bumper sticker on a cash register the other night "cheer up emo kid."

amazing new pizza place in our 'hood. garage pizza!

dunno why. but i thought it was funny how that woman was holding her nikon.

dunno why but i've been shooting a lot of surveillance cameras.

they creep me the fuck out.

i just think of some underpaid jack-off ... sitting there and ... not really seeing what he "should be seeing."

i honestly think that people shit on the u.s., especially in relatively socialist countries, because they're jealous of the opportunities afforded here to both the truly talented and those with an amazing skillset of bullshit. ;)

oh, yeah, these photos ... all with the beast. some 50/1.4 with a 1 stop b+w ND. the 70-200/2.8L and the 45/2.8 TS. edited and exported with aperture, of course.

just got a proper nd for the 45/2.8 TS! :) i only had a 3 and 6 stop in the 72mm flavour. pain in the ass.

looks cool ... the results ... but ... pain in the ass for sure.

one stop should do it.

stopped for a coffee and there were crows all over the friggin' place.

not sure i'm a fan.

the bain of the suburban-american's existence at present.

wait until the monsters of the current administration invade iran! just wait.

think even obama could pull out if that happened?

i'll bet not.

greed must be an amazing thing to think about all day.

world domination.

ya' know.

they so look "caught."

had a couple 580ex's bouncing around triggered with the IR thing.

he's getting big. :(

not bad for iso 1000. i know ... i know ... nikon's d3 goes to like iso 25000+.

whatever.

i know what works for me.

even in the shittiest concert lighting iso 800 and iso 1000 have always worked for me. then again, i use fast glass.

dunno why everyone is so excited about shit cameras can do that they'll almost never use.

makes me laugh.

then again, what makes me laugh harder is being popular at the behest of a bunch of emo-fucks. ;)

ridiculously cute. :)

one more, 'kay?

was looking for the 600 but ... alas ... it's in the equipment locker at the bureau.

sorry ... i know ... what was i thinking doing a pet portrait with anything less than a four or six hunksi? dunno.

lets see ... what else ... oh yeah ... i'm launching my own personal blog again with the help of jark. why? i loved the autonomy of having my blog. not only, this one will be tied to my professional site.

no, i am not leaving uber. i will continue to post photos and blogs and whatever on uber.com ... on here i can be different than something tied to my professional profile.

the blogs on my personal professional site will be a bit different, though.

and ... i have some contributors as well. :) think ... theonlinephotographer.com but with talent. ;) perhaps there will be more "political correctness" as well. ;)

nhat tells me the promo for the contest is coming along and should be finished by the end of the week! i cannot wait for someone to win a new zeiss ikon rangefinder and a nice semi-fast lens.

never understood why zeiss never did any one-four glass ... but ... two-oh is almost as nice.

yep.

i'm gonna have some nice pasta.

hope you're all off to a nice week. this is a busy one for me!

M looks so funny with the goggles great shot, I hope no animals were harmed during the making of that!

Dude you are so going down stairs to the hot toasty place.

I'll stay out of the Cuba debate suffice to say I've read stuff about this before and all I can say is lies, damn lies and statistics.

I'm getting lots of images together of CCTV cams in London and will eventually post a blog, I really like how you used the TS to isolate the camera - great example of how to use a tool to great effect.

Racing Fuel - WTF, I laughed my ass off at that. "we don't need no stinkin' gas, gimme the fuckin' Racing Fuel' bro". Have you still got your Imprezza?

@clayton-the-cobrasnake-of-chicago: i totally agree. i have changed my mind several times when presented with a good argument which makes sense.

googled the castro surgery thing! nice work!

@Dinosoursa: and i'm fighting for her not to play waterpolo. fucks up all of the work put into learning the strokes. ;)

that is not the doctor-to-citizen ratio i want to participate in. funny when you hear people, especially socialists, make these claims. they don't even know what the fuck they're talking about. yeah! i want 1,000's of under-trained cuban doctors taking care of me! that's what i want.

fucking socialists. ;)

Oh and the picture of the chubby kid in the swimmers outfit is funny!

On your thoughts on the Cuba thang... Totally agree with you.
I don't think Iran is gonna get attack thou.... Venezuela might be next.
I might be wrong, but it's just a hunch:)

Anyway, hope you're having a good week so far.

thanks!

that's why i made the photo of the fat kid. i know. bad. but ... i laughed. wish people could just admit that shit's funny.

um ... just because you get free health care and the doctor to person ratio is very high ... um ... that doesn't mean i want to have an operation there.

he won't touch venezuela unless he makes a case for hugo being the next pablo. ;) or perhaps noriega. ;)

very busy but good, brother!

Great shots of M and B... really made me laugh with the one where "they're caught".

Some really great points for discussion in this entry Chris, I've always found it strange when people compared Cuba to either the US or Canada. Spending two weeks on a Cuban beach doesn't give anybody the right to criticize the way things to the north... this could be a long discussion.

Can wait to see what the contest is all about :)
Have a great week!
Take care!

Posted by Chris on
thanks, mate! they were totally caught.

it totally doesn't give anyone the right to criticize ... especially if they're a true socialist at heart. i think it sucks that the perpetually unemployed can have the same benefits as people who work hard. bullshit.

soon. in fact! :)

hope you had a great week, mate!

I'm assuming that one picture of the times are for the 50 m breaststroke? Wow she's fast man! Dude back on my swim team days some high schoolers couldn't swim breast in that time! Any chance you know what her other events are?

haha and I love the "caught" picture. I'm sure it was totally innocent.

cheers man
Posted by Chris on
they are! and, yes, her coach says she's very fast. right now during practice she competes against boys.

she does the breast, back, free and butterfly! she doesn't like IM because "it tires her out." hmm...

totally innocent if you're not a spaniel.

cheers back!
Posted by Dinosoursa... on
oh man total all rounder girl huh? Haha and I bet some of the boys can't keep up. Awesome yea you keep her swimming and she'll make league finals in high school and beyond without a sweat. IM is surely tough though....

oh and in terms of cuba, they actually do have better health care. Not in the sense of quality of health care mind you, but the fact that the ratio of doctor to patient is extremely high....like 1:10 or something as high as that. Its crazy. I mean, when numbers counts, cuba takes the gold prize. But of course nothing beats UCSF...like nothing. hahaha.

Hi Chris!
Congrats to B for her wins....
You puppy getting busted for doing "things dogs do" !
Hilariously nefarious boy!
That's what happens when you put goggles on 'em
Our boy started getting "frisky dingo" one night while we were all in bed......
Margaret "explained" to him what Alpha Female really meant.
He got it.
Quick study that one.
Unlike his male owner.
Lost interest in who gets elected with the rigged election machines they have in place.
The owners of the companies are rabid(and i use the term in it's fullest meaning)Republicans.
Will it matter?
Wanna bet that McCain wins by a "slim" margin??
Rome took hundreds of years to fall apart.
Bet it only takes fifty years for us(O.K. that's two bets)
Today our weather in the Bluff City matches Chicago.
Found a place here we may make an offer on.
Keep your lenses crossed.
Finally, good for you that you found a site that has only pros talking shop.
Counts me out as a B-lister for sure.
Our best to the future Gold-Medal winner and all.
Ken Z.

thank you.

he gets busted all of the time. very nefarious.

you should see him with a ski mask on.

frisky dingo! amazing.

it's not gonna matter. honestly, i see some kind of "incident" happening and it's gonna scare the fuck out of america ...

and ... you know what happens then?

a scared america elects the fear monger. ;)

funny that americans are so smug as to think "nuthin' can touch us." then again, most have no concept of the ramifications of history...

and that it repeats.

lenses crossed for sure!

thank you so much! i love watching her do something she's so good at!

amazing girl!

@chris: I'd absolutely love a Lux, but I'm 19, can't afford it (yet) ;) hell, i'm already so lucky being able to shoot with the stuff I have now...

Canon 5D + 24/1.4 would be friggin' nice too (love 24mm). But you know, I feel so bad anyway, 'cause I got the feeling I'm using my cameras way too little
Posted by Chris on
for 19 you have a pretty good arsenal, mate. i'm sure the 'luxes and nocti's will be yours some day!

5d and 24/1.4 would be very nice for sure.

then ... get out and make more photos!

god, yes, an incredibly busy busy week is in store for me...

wow shes quite the swimmer huh... cute m photos.. more to say about cuba american healthcare gdp thing but i'm exhausted and cannot type more at the moment.

the whole world is running out of fuel.. gah. you should see the state here.
Posted by Chris on
busy is good most of the time.

she is! thank you! m is pretty photogenic making the job easy!

sorry you're exhausted!

we are.

is it bad there?
Posted by devika on
quite bad. about 58 rupees a litre. that's about $1.40 but i'm not sure how many litres make a gallon. i think it may be close to 4.5.
whats your scene like?

plus, a city close to me ran out of fuel last week. can you believe it. the whole place came to a standstill. dry for like 2 days. then life returned.

i was showing a colleague some photos from your photos from uber yesterday since i was commenting on the blog and she was marveling over them and couldn't stop talking about what a good photographer you are. looks like you got another fan :)
Posted by Chris on
@joona: but everyone's driving saabs and shit so no one gets hurt. ;) most, if not all, of us have hefty uninsured and gap insurance. seriously, with 5.2M people you could totally insure people if the tax rate was like 60%.

wait.

it is. ;)

kidding.

as much as certain people may disagree ... i still feel that socialism breeds laziness.

dunno what the homeless cost us ... but i doubt many really want to work nor educate themselves besides if crack and malt liquor get you higher than crack and regular beer. ;)

there are plenty of amazing med schools in europe according to my doctor-friend. if he's good with them, i'm good with them.

i just push a button for a living. ;)

and twist a ring sometimes.

is there a doctorate in fine arts? dunno. if your country gives those away for free, they need to have their collective heads examined. ;)

fresh air? dunno if i could handle that shit.

cheers from l.a.!

You must be a proud father...grats.

High iso...i do use 1600 but you need to convert it to BW...1600+color dont really work...what is still better is tmax@1600...

Socialism...what can one say. I am from India but i work in Norway. India is just like the US...bad politicians, corruptions, capitalism, private health care. Norway- Oslo is the most expensive city in the world...basic tax starts at 38%. With that tax and a population of 4 million...sure...you can provide decent healthcare.

But in a place like India...with 1.5 billion people...free heath care just does not work.

Also i agree with you on...i dont want to work my ass off so that some bum on the street gets free medical...get a job.

For all the shit people give to the US...its still cool...if you work hard and are talented you can make it big...no fucking socialism. Sad part is getting a VISA is pretty much impossible now.

love it but regretfully i didn't see the final.

you're so emo.

politics and photography! as it should be

ahh, i think obama has the chops to do it. it always amazes me that folks say he's just all talk when he actually does present well thought out plans to problems (that folks just seem to ignore)

but even if a one eyed goat was running against mccain i would vote for the one eyed goat cause i know we can't take 4 more years of GOP rule

and on the photography side, i really do like the photo were you're checking her seed time. that's really cool. (always weird seeing color from you. even though you've posted tons and tons of color i always seem to think of you as a black/white photographer)

anywho, back to trying to live a blue life in the grand ole state of mississippi ;)
