Happy Friday Chris,
It's Donato's foster daughter...he adopted her when she was 13 and now she's a bright 20 year old interning with Tarina. Really wonderful.

Hope you and the lovely lady are well! x

going donkey...
i know. i know. but, seriously, if "they" can do it ... so can i. ;)

i mean, why not?

i'm sure that wank would say that tilt-shifts are to be used for architecture and some product work. not that he'd really know, of course, what any kind of genre of photography dictates ...

but i find using different types of equipment -- besides using sixhundredfouroh's for portraits -- for their unintended purposes kind of fun.

fun to me is not shooting the brush in some boring canyon. fun to me is not shooting a brick wall. why do they do this? these "internet reviewers." why? because they know absolutely nothing about composition. perhaps they know "a bit" and "a bit" is very loosely defined in the context of their work. so ... they will keep shooting mundane photos which mean absolutely nothing in the context of whatever they're reviewing.

i will take a well-composed photo which is perhaps not tack or unsharp over some f/16 sharp-ass photo of bullshit.

thing is ... people like wank will never "get it." he has -- to be sure -- some little group of sycophants with their tongues firmly planted in some posterior location which may result in said tongues coming out brown. i'm sure there are people with absolutely no talent telling him he's "got talent." so far from the truth.

i'd rather listen to real shooters like thorsten or darren or my other friends. i'd rather talk gear with ap shooters, reuters shooters ... perhaps even some getty shooters ...

but many of you don't get that opportunity.

that's why i'm here. i'm here to help. whilst i may have some sort of advertising i will not post a link begging for handouts. that amazes me. thanks for pointing that out thorsten. in fact, i know a handful of passionate and talented amateurs i'd rather discuss gear with .. than anyone like wank.

see ... wank sucks. he couldn't get a photo-assignment from a legitimate publication to save his life.

and ... because of that ... he's so jealous he can taste his own bile.

anyway ... sold a mark 2 and decided to get the canon 45/2.8 TS (manual focus). friends said the 28 wasn't all that good ... and for me the 90 was just a bit tight. i know idiots who don't know any better would say a 45 or 50 is too wide to shoot people but ... they don't know shit. ;)

i have some on my card but i don't have a card reader at this location.

have a beautiful photo of j! :)

lets see ... c looked pretty cool ...

such a cool in-camera effect. fuck filters. fuck star bokeh filters. (you know who i'm talking about).

non-equipment ... so ... the next contest here on uber ... yes ... it's gonna be a street contest.&nbmn_block_index}]

UPDATE: see those last string with block index? uber ate my post. i didn't see the rest of the photos when i went to look at the comments ... so ... instead of bitch about some bug ... i'll just repost the photos ...

love this view of c.

she did a pretty good job.

homage to puts ... had to include a brick wall. ;)

still pissed my post was cut by 7/8 and i have to repost. sucks.

oh, yeah, puts ... if you want to be taken seriously, why the fuck do you have a fucking cat in your banner?

love this. don't love burbank but i love this.

love this, too ... but ... not because of what they're offering. the sv valley ... ah.

crazy. a year ago you would have fought someone for a space to "be a consumer." now ... the trees are lonely and this parking lot's only inhabitants.

such failed policy. it's really sad when you think about it.

she doesn't make me sad, though.

she doesn't either.

amazing eyes ... that j. :)

amazing twinkle. poster-child for coca-cola. ;)

*thinks that having no save draft in edit post mode kinda sucks*

he's nice enough but he freaks me out. dunno why.

semi-feral.

food-motivated.

i know. so is c. ;)

our waiter the other day.

his, too.

plastic-looking person in a plastic world.

love how you can isolate someone's moment from everything going on around. i llike doing this with dof but it's now very interesting to do with a shift as well.

so ... my original post ... dunno ... went to edit and it showed an abbreviated version of what i originally posted. normally, i'd be pissed off because wasting my time is the worst thing one can do. anyone's for that matter. whatever.

so, yeah, new contest coming. great judges. a great prize! a prize i would use myself any day of the week.

and ... oh ... just saw this:

"You people who know Flickr: Who is this guy? He's not me. Is he a fan, another guy named Ken Rockwell, or what?"

and then ... this ...

thought that was funny. full-view and look at the public groups. i don't advocate spoofing someone but ... since it happened ... it's funny. ;)

have a great weekend. even you evil uber blog editor. ;)

cheers from the now-baking-l.a.!

sorry ... one more thing ... check out cory's last blog. i think it's amazing that the very top of a site (e.g., glenna at uber.com) comes from a background which includes major exhibitions. there is such a different result coming from an "art-first, then community" mindset than another which perhaps has a community-first, then art mindset. i think it's interesting, at least.

I think non-intended use is how any creative change originates. Shift that bitch.

The plastic guy is great.
Posted by Chris on May 21, 2008 12:42 AM
thanks ... i'll continue shifting the bitch! ;)

i love the plasticky-ness of humans in general with that lens ...

wait .. perhaps people look more plastic in la than nyc? ;)

Hi Chris!
Just viewed the pots site....
Talk about a left-handed complement !
Your dragging shots remind me of the stop-action stuff on "Adult Swim" on "Some times we drive you to tears" Cast Cable.
Do you still have that site for the fashion mag you talked about you did work for??
They're a little slow on that sort of stuff here....
Not quite like the "An old- Guy and all his spiritual-13 year-old wives" type,but....
More than a few "granny-dress" to be sure.
Takes getting used to.
I wonder why the fine State of Texas hasn't booked those very busy men on Child-Rape charges yet ????
We have our share of empty lots here too....
I'll take a photo or 2 and post them at my place here.
Then i'll get the art donkeys to push them as the "freshest new artist around"...
Or not;-).
Love to all,
GFG & Lady M.
P.S.
If you want a gift for J(or C for that matter),Lady M designs earrings and necklace jewelery that i assemble as per her designs(she has the talent and i do the grunt work).I'll sent you a photo or two with prices "on spec" if you want.
Just a thought (and only said once).
GFG

stop-action stuff on adult swim, eh? hmm...

my isp was up to its shittiness this weekend ... again.

i don't remember which mag you were talking about... refresh my memory.

i think there's something to do with a "set up" in texas that they're mulling. seems sick to me, though.

and that creep in new mexico just got booked on child rape.

bastard.

lets see those empty lots!

and for sure ... send me some photos of the jewelry!

cheers!

Nice job! Tilt Shift Street, a genre I haven't come accross before. Most of the stuff I have seen has been about making trucks and stuff look like toys. Some really interesting effects. What happened with the mall car park? Did the place close down?
I like the last one, It's like you've frozen the man in some alternate dimension.
Thanks for sharing, cheers.
Posted by Chris on May 18, 2008 6:47 PM
yep. why not street it thought? i mean ... even tho my d-slr's are gigantic.

the mall car park is connected to some home kinda store, of which the genre isn't doing quite well.

that's what it felt to me that photo!

thanks for the comment, mate!

i always find it an interesting approach when I see photographers shooting around with lenses, which original purpose is actually something else, like tilt and shift for street :) i already thought it was kinda nice, when severin used it on the red carpet, you remember the entry? oh well, that contest sounds very interesting, looking forward to some more details :)
Posted by Chris on May 18, 2008 2:24 PM
i do, too. and, yes, i totally recall sev's forray into red carpet. just wish he could have been more "in the mix" as it were.

more details soon!
Posted by David Dayb... on May 17, 2008 1:06 PM
wow, a lot of comments

but seriously, some of the pictures look like you miniaturized people and took pics of the dolls
Posted by Chris on May 17, 2008 5:06 PM
sometimes there are!

they totally look like little dolls in big-dollhouse-land. kinda like it, though!
Posted by equivoque on May 16, 2008 10:17 PM
i like the motel shot a lot. what's wrong with faux bokeh? ;-)
Posted by Chris on May 16, 2008 11:37 PM
i thought you would, love.

faux bokeh. please let it go away soon.

http://www.flickr.com/photos/onan2006/87417125/

i just had to post this from fake rockwell's flickr account... a 4x5 with a motor drive, brilliant!
Posted by Chris on May 16, 2008 11:39 PM
without motordrive! that's phenomenal!

thanks for sharing!
Posted by DP on May 16, 2008 8:25 PM
I know you don't like people talking about "bokeh" but it struck me as watery.. I don't know. Just very cool. New gear is always a plus.
Posted by Chris on May 16, 2008 11:40 PM
it's all good ... we haven't come up with a suitable name yet.

and, yes, although i'm sure the online photographer guy hasn't chimed in as to the "quality of the bokeh" of this lens ... i think it's pretty good!

yes, it is ...
Posted by Toastycake... on May 16, 2008 8:03 PM
I used to shoot 4x5 "handheld." Every asshole I met told me it was impossible - my profs even... Fuck um, fuck people telling you "the rules" (a la these "masters of photography" website douches) and what you can and can't do. I even made a few decent photos here and there... The problem about living the nomadic l.a. life though is that you lose track of shit. I had a size 13 shoebox stuffed with 4x5 chromes (big feet) and a fatty roll of 30x40 inch prints... dust? who knows. I just read some article about 2 photogs winning like $800,000 from Corbis for the loss of their photo catalogues - reward based on projected earnings instead of value, kinda crazy.
Posted by Chris on May 17, 2008 8:36 PM
you crazy.

and you lost the negs? damn.

i just read about that award in pdn. i've seen how tony stone was run so it's no stretch to imagine some boxes of chromes could have been improperly stored and lost in the mix.

very crazy.
Posted by Dmitry on May 16, 2008 6:36 PM
That tilt shift is wicked i like how it kinda makes everything look like toys.

Gota try it sometime. I seen a article at school how to make a tiltshitf lense using a medium format lense to shoot on 35mm. I think it also involved a toilet plunger LOL
Posted by Chris on May 17, 2008 8:37 PM
it makes everything plasticky and toy-like.

hope you try it!

i'll stick with the canon-non-plunger-model, thank you. ;)
Posted by PaulW on May 16, 2008 6:01 PM
i can so see you in your little girl,
its the smile,
and in your dog too,
is that wierd,

anyway, catching up on your posts,
tis fun

Posted by Chris on May 16, 2008 11:54 PM
i hear that a lot!

me, the kid and the dog! wow! a triumvirate of similar smiles!

how are the posts treating you so far, mate?

thanks for the comment!!!

When I write my articles for LAist, I always compose them in a text editor and then copy and paste it into the web browser. Which doesn't mean that Uber shouldn't have a draft blogging mode because it should, but I'm just saying that if your browser craps out, you still have your text.
Posted by Chris on May 16, 2008 11:59 PM
love LAist!!!!!

and you know what? i used to do the same in the text editor because my journals at dA would crash, my wordpress bullshit would crash ... and i should know better than rely on this one as well. hmm...

i think i'm going back to it.

thanks for reminding me!
Posted by Treamus on May 16, 2008 5:10 PM
Yeah screw lensbabies that TS rocks. As for that spoof of Rockwell funny as hell.
Posted by devika on May 16, 2008 5:04 PM
gay boyfriends and vinyl babes.. lol
i am so utterly fascinated by the last string of photos. tilt shift again?
incredible.

losing your post sucks. i have blogged in so long and the two times i tried, i lost both posts so i didnt bother after that. may have a go next week again.

saw a cat like that in spain. freaked me out. i shall post that sometime. and im pretty sure that was an evil cat.. it's all in the eyes.
Posted by Chris on May 17, 2008 12:02 AM
yep, tilt shift! it's been incredibly fun.

it sooo sooo sooo does. i'm gonna be doing them in text editors from now on and then reposting here.

lets see the post of that evil beast!

totally all in the eyes. i mean .. they're fucking yellow! ;)
Posted by Richard Po... on May 16, 2008 3:51 PM
Glad I got to see the whole post! Great pictures Chris! I love that lens! The picture of C from top is awesome and the way you isolated some moments.
I also dig the one where the mannequin is crossing the street :)

Hope you have a great weekend!
Take care!
Posted by Chris on May 16, 2008 4:06 PM
that's why i re-posted.

thank you. glad you liked what i saw!

you as well, mate.

Chris,

Have you ever tried the Zeiss 100/2 makro? I hear that it allows you to do selective focus as well.
Thanks
Posted by Chris on May 16, 2008 4:07 PM
i haven't but i'll email someone so perhaps i can!!!

thanks for letting me know!
Posted by arthur on May 16, 2008 1:18 PM
tilt shift is just so fucking cool. that's one thing i really like about the big disgusting 4x5. and when i found out it was available for 35mm after i saw sev use one on a red carpet in one of his blogs i wanted to get one to fuck around with ... i
