Hey Chris,
I bumped into Mark when he was here in the Philippines. Handed him a couple tiny calling cards. Hope he gets to hand one to you. He said he'd probably see you next week. I might drop by December, maybe we can kick it then.

Happy Friday Chris,
It's Donato's foster daughter...he adopted her when she was 13 and now she's a bright 20 year old interning with Tarina. Really wonderful.

Hope you and the lovely lady are well! x

what a long week!
usually i get to sleep until a normal time ... for me ... which most would say is a bit close to noon. whatever. i'm a fucking vampire. but thrown in call times which require me to wake earlier and not participate in a "normal" amount of sleep...

jes'.

that image on a nice huge cinema screen like i have. but ... can't make it too big for the web.

i get lotsa film back from the lab today! :) happy 'bout that.

it was a "subdued e3" this year. last year i didn't quite get it. the year before had too many fans and not enough industry people. not that i know shit about video games besides the platforms and some of the bigger published titles.

this was seriously the most people i'd see in one place as it was quite barren at the convention center. this was the big sony playstation press conference.

used the t/s as well...

probably another reason my body hurts. equipment. equipment. equipment.

i should do more of these.

no idea what his name was. i did when i made the photo and voice-tagged it on the beast but ... not now.

the beast is a heavy bitch.

the napolitano bitch and damian of the ap. so nice shooting with your friends.

and even ones hiding behind gigantic 400's.

so funny ... i hear line photographers yell at publicists and event organizers and even the talent. and ... i just laugh because if you have like five REAL OUTLETS there, everyone else is completely inconsequential and largely FUCKING IRRELEVANT.

and it's funny explaining that to them.

and then telling them that the only reason they're there is that the event organizers and publicists ... know it's cheaper to have them for free rather than calling central casting for 50 "people with cameras."

i'm a dick. i know.

whatever.

that's jack. he did the entire press conference this year. kaz ... kinda took a backseat. he had a trailer with his name on it ... but .. remained quiet this year.

the stage was sony-impressive as always.

lotsa media. and even though the guy frame left didn't speak english he still let me borrow his pen to write a note on the seat i reserve "sit here and die."

kidding.

i would never do that.

;)

i think the highlight for me was watching this kaz. different kaz than the last one i mentioned. this kaz is the man behind gran turismo.

the dude even did the gui behind the gt-r portion of the newest gran turismo.

homeboy breathes his game and ... when you see it ... you see that someone definitely put their life into it.

such a nice guy ... and ... kept playing around with his game for the himself and to show different media outlets.

funny that the top game developers all share the real love for their games. you can tell a difference between those and "perhaps others." ;)

a little off-camera flash.

i used the mp right before i made this one with one of the canon bodies.

sorry ... off-topic ... go check out one of my friends ... meryl. she just made an uber page! love the aesthetic she has in her photos. SHE SHOULD POST MORE! :)

... and of course .. some requisite atmosphere ...

as much as it was much more interesting to photograph in the past with all of the fans-slash-wannabe-media showing up ...

there were still cool photos.

and ... of course ... interesting photos to and from venues and gigs...

one way to move a house.

crazy area where both usc and the shrine are located, actually.

there were two frames. one he wasn't looking at me but i didn't like the background as the taxi wasn't going by in a blurred state.

this one homeboy's looking at me.

then again, i have a macbook pro on the hood of my car moving photos and ... i'm also making a photo.

after looking at the two photos, though, and as much as i prefer photos of people "not looking at me" because it kinda includes the photographer in the story ...

i thought the look he was giving in this frame ... was just ... something.

and ... of course on a giant screen ... love it.

the backstage area of the shrine.

there are photos everywhere.

and saw so many ... having thought this exact though but still leaving all of the gear in the back part of my car.

it's alright ... i still learn from the photos i didn't make.

okay ... got lotsa shit to do. sometimes i forget that i have more than work in my life. ;)

there's always someone around to remind me that ... in fact ... i do.

and ... it's funny ... still feel so lucky to have her in my life. even after all this time. ;)

hope your collective week is progressing nicely. turns out gavin rossdale turned into a pussy this weekend. ;) whatever. we get to do the party circuit as guests. ;)

cheers from the balmy-i'm-told-la-la-land!

(haven't been outside yet)

voice tagging! that's an amazing idea- i was trying to figure out a way to remember people's names. i wonder if the d3 has that - i'm gunna do some research! i'm saving up! i need to get new bodies man!!

the photos look dope- i saw them on wireimage! it must be fun to shoot one of these things and it looks a lot more easy going than the regular stuff you do!

i know what you mean about the line photogs ... i remember when i was shooting kanye west's after party for george a while ago, some little shit who claimed he was CP stood in front of me AND et canada and i gave him shit ... he had a point and shoot and he came late and then just stood in front of us. plus i know the guys who shoot for CP in toronto and he wasn't with them. one of the CP guys shoots with an mp though!! and i mean, if i was shooting for a small mag i wouldn't care as much - it would still suck, but i'd know "my place" - but my pass said WIREIMAGE in big letters ... so i didn't want some little lying loser with a point and shoot in front of me. but et canada beat me to cussing the dumbass out. ahaha. it was hilarious. and when lupe fiasco came in, after i got my photos, i looked back at him and he was struggling with his camera cause it wasn't fast enough and lupe just walked away ... he didn't even have a media pass. probably an obsessed fan.

love the "everyday-life" photos too!

anyways- i have to get back to working on band stuff! i hooked my band up with playing wakestock this year which is a pretty big three day concert in toronto (i think like 15,000 people went last year) and i'm designing all our merch and album and all that ... so i've been living under a rock for a while making sure everything is ready and getting all the forms in to the right people etc. but i'm so excited! it's what i canceled my trip to europe for! can't wait! i'm trying to get george to shoot us! he offered!!

glad you've been well and keeping busy! and i'm a vampire too lately ... i went to bed at 6am last night! lots of work to do!

talk to you soon bro!
Posted by Chris on
nikons not only voice-tag but they also playback although it's pretty hard to hear.

you probably look at wire more than i do, bro! :)

if they have a point-and-shoot, they're lying. bottom line. happy someone came to your defence and helped out with telling the little fuck where to go. ;)

good luck with the band stuff! sounds amazing. and ... it sounds like a good reason to have skipped the e.u. this summer.

very well.

and happy you liked the photos!

That second to last frame... gorgeous... seriously gorgeous... I need a 35 prime for my Canon. 35/1.4L preferably...

thanks, mate!

i would love to have the 35/1.4L as well!

That comment of the "line photographers" was really fuckin' mean.

It's always funny when you're shooting an event and there's the newbie photog following you around and sometimes asking for help... it wasn't too long when I was THAT guy. Now I ask less ;)

Every time I read a blog here I say... ok it's time to update my gallery.... it'll never happen at this rate.

Will do, will do.

And God bless Nintendo, I'm such a fanboy.

Posted by Chris on
you don't know 95% of the l.a. line photographers, though. ;) i probably wasn't mean enough.

interesting ... 'cause i never was "that guy." ;)

thing is ... if someone isn't too annoying i'll actually help them.

it is time!

hope to see some new work!

fanboy? you can just say fan. ;)

eheh, i read about the E3 presentations, and it didn't seem to be really interesting. anyway. i haven't played video games in such a long time. digging that nightshot of the man looking at you.
Posted by Chris on
i didn't pay attention.

neither have i. much longer you than you, though. ;)

i really liked that one as well, mate!
Posted by Treamus on
Good to see you got out the TS again. I have not played video games in ten years, just always have better things to do, wish I had that much free time.

Had drinks with a Wireimage shooter you know last night ;)
Posted by Chris on
it's funny ... the first week i had it on the 5d a lot ... then got a bit tired of it. then would pick it up after about 10 days...

very interesting lens.

i never really got into video games. i was more about playing d&d with my friends in the nude.

kidding.

which wireimage shooter do i know?

What I've read thus far indicates that the 2006 E3 was the last great spectacle of a gaming convention, what with Sony unveiling the Playstation 3 and Nintendo unveiling the Wii (which led to lines that were six hours long!). Downsizing and moving it to Santa Monica for 2007 was reportedly a fiasco, and moving it back to the convention center this year was apparently just okay.

Quite frankly, I lost interest when they banned the booth babes (semi-kidding), but yeah, I guess you could consider me to be one of those gamers who enjoyed the spectacle, at least while it lasted. :)
Posted by Chris on
what you said was exactly what i remember. i was like having deja vu when i read that. funny.

they did? don't think playstation ever had them.

it was just hard to work around non-media with that many people. i wasn't really a hater. ;)
Posted by devika on
absolutely love the backstage area of the shrine shot.... and the one way to move a house :) wow i've always wondered what those conventions are like.. i would be so lost there..but it would still be kind of cool...

you have an incredible amount of energy considering you do oh so very many things
Posted by Chris on
thank you, love.

this one was quite small by prior year's standards!

depends upon the day ... but ... yeah ... i do! ;)

thank you.

warm in the middle east in the summer? who knew!?

at least you got to go to work at a video game conference =)
and "i still learn from the photos i didn't make" is such a great observation...since once you've made the photo, you're basically done.
Posted by Chris on
um, yeah. ;)

pretty much. i think it pretty much makes me "want" to make the photo i didn't make but saw.

I know your love of the cinema displays -- I would have gotten the 30" one if I had a desk that could have handled it! As it is, the 23" does just fine (for now!).

Still, I wouldn't turn down a 30 now! I'd just get a bigger place to live!

That's an awesome bit of realization regarding the shooter's line being invited just out of convenience and saving money! Some pals of mine always wondered why there were so many people there, when really the shots only seemed to be taken by a crew of 10 or so people for everything. Nice to know why that is now! Ha!

It's awesome you've got more than work on your plate, but that you remember it, too. I'm sure those around you wouldn't let you forget for long if it ever got that far though... J seems cool like that, indeed! Congrats, man! Hell, I still remember when it was just happening for you and her!
Posted by Chris on
23" does very well, in fact.

i was exaggerating about the line but it's pretty much the truth. they yell. they yell even when they get their photo. amazing.

she is cool like that! :)

Great blog post. Nice to see some more TS-E shots. Is it the 45mm one?
How many cameras did you take? Beast, Leica, 5D???
I feel a bit sorry for those other guys... that's probably where I'd be standing if I didn't write for the mag!!
If you ever get bored of having all that fancy kit (cameras, screens etc), you know where to send it!! ;-)

Cheers,

Stewart.

Posted by Chris on
yes, it's the 45. and, thanks, glad you liked it.

the beast and a 5d with a couple flashes and everything from a 16-35 to the 70-200 along with a very fast prime. :)

what's funny to me is when a "line only" photographer gets a bit of access and has no idea what to shoot if they're let into a party. no, i don't let them follow me 'round. ;)

yep, i know a few places to send it!

I think the Wii kicked everyone's ass in the game industry....but more important mate, when do u do all that u do, if u sleep a lot??? u e everywhere aaand blogging like crazy.... hats down.. i know it's your job and hobby at the same time, but the energy u put in it..amazing...
the D70s is a heavy bitch...the Yashica is a heavy bitch...so I dont really want to know how heavy is the beast :)

cheers from rainy europe..
Posted by Chris on
conversely, i think the wii has tested the market for platforms with a much better processor. ;)

i get my share of sleep for sure.

but, yes, i do, in fact, have a lot of energy.

d70s is heavy???? hmm...

the beast is lighter than the last one.

cheers back! sorry to hear it's raining.
Posted by trajcov on
i think it is...since I have the nikon 35 STi, everything is heavy :)

German Games Convention is now the place to be for the Fans ..
Well, It's unbelievable how much influence the games industry got today and it's getting more and more important.
Posted by Chris on
ah ... didn't know that.

probably more important than the movie industry! the game development budgets rival those of movies, too!

You made the backstage of the Shrine shine. I'm beginning to appreciate the TS as an extremely fine focus tool on the time. Great work.
Posted by Chris on
and it's not a place which normally shines.

you should get a ts!

thank you, mate!
Posted by Richard Po... on
Incredible to see how gaming became such a big industry and especially how complex the games have gotten. Nice shots... always a big fan of your TS.

Hope you get to play outside :)
Take care!
Posted by Chris on
i've been to some of the development studios to shoot portraits of the developers. crazy shit going on there!

thank you! i very much enjoy that lens for sure.

i think we're going to get to! :)

you as well!

whats the first lesson, 'always have your camera with you', so i went fishing straight from work today without my camera, and whats 30yds in front of us for over an hour? a fucking shark, thats what! a basking shark no less! totally safe, but so weird seeing a 14ft shark with a big ass fin gliding about. what with that and a seal as well, zero fish about. might canoe out to see if it's back tomorrow, and i'll definately have a camera with me then.
Posted by Chris on
always.

loser. ;)

that would have been a great photo ... then again ... you learned from that situation and ... the photo you didn't get to make.
Posted by mahomo on
and astonishingly, as i pressed submit on that, someone called me to say theres a whale in the bay too! took the camera this time ;) got a grainy dark shot that looks like the loch ness monster heh heh, the way things are going, i'll see that tomorrow too. so the moral is take the camera everywhere! great to see your happy, and even doing the party circuit! enjoy your sleep. oh, and the first and last shots are amazing as ever ;)
Posted by Chris on
perhaps it was a loch ness? send it to the iranian revo guard's photo dept: bet they can make it a loch ness! :)

thanks mate!!!!!

ahahha.. just noticed the vampire bit.. yeah, im guilty of that, Arthur and I have had conversations about the photographic vampire in all of us ;)
