Hey Chris,
I bumped into Mark when he was here in the Philippines. Handed him a couple tiny calling cards. Hope he gets to hand one to you. He said he'd probably see you next week. I might drop by December, maybe we can kick it then.

Happy Friday Chris,
It's Donato's foster daughter...he adopted her when she was 13 and now she's a bright 20 year old interning with Tarina. Really wonderful.

Hope you and the lovely lady are well! x

you're no cee-lo...
nope, you're not. so ... i'll get to that in a second. my friend a.m. did a set with his friend travis barker last night...

and the backstage area of the roxy ... still stinks like all sortsashit.
walks onstage and introduces "the guys" ... um ... i thought he was cee-lo...

and at this point i still thought it was cee-lo. it wasn't until i talked with him backstage. wait. i still thought it was cee-lo. but j, when i made a remark about cee-lo, says to me "that's not cee-lo; that's jermaine dupri, freak."

i wondered because cee-lo was a bit bigger than jermaine. i mean ... jermaine is "pretty little" but he's very nice.

the guys attracted a pretty good crowd...

honestly, i've never seen -- besides am and travis -- a dj and a drummer do a set. i think it's cool because it doesn't look all that easy.

how many other dj's could pull that off?

not many.

so ... basically ... i had one flash just to the right of centerstage on a little stand. another flash was held by j ...

anytime i pointed my camera at am ... j would raise her arm up out of the crowd and aim it toward am.

had the flash trigger on my beast. worked very well.

wouldn't normally use flash but it was DARK DARK DARK.

just as our friend jermaine found out...

i believe that is a summicron. hmm ... at iso 800 with the m8 ... he would have been at like a fifteenth ... wide open ...

then again, i doubt he was on manual.

and ... 800 ... is about the top of the game iso-wise for the m8.

wonder if he's liking what he's seeing.

i kinda don't think he was.

the 35 becomes a bastardized fifty. and ... from his angle ... um ...

not so much.

when i was backstage i said "hows that m8 treating you?"

"yeah, i like it .. it's cool."

i still don't think he knew what an m8 was even though it was around his neck.

in a fucking leather case that only old men use to protect their lovely "gear."

hmm...

anyway.

it's all good.

i just think it's funny when people go out of their way to protect equipment.

use it.

abuse it.

make photos with it.

never ever fondle it. ;)

kinda-normal exposure...

and ...

on acid.

oh ... the colours. ;)

there were colours every-fucking-where.

and nowhere...

i really liked 4 and 6 second exposures last night. ;)

had no clue who this was.

again, j knew: too short.

my friend niko says "you really need to step up your urban game."

"what urban game?"

;)

it's so much fun to shoot drummers at slow shutter speeds with multiple flashes...

seriously, the canon eos 1ds mark 3 ... i don't know if there's ever been a better -- for my needs -- digital camera ever made.

i know. the d3 is very nice.

i know.

oh, yeah ... more colours...

that was a 5d with the 50/1.4, though.

which is another amazing digital camera ... especially for the money.

off the topic of drummers and dj's ... in france ... when i heard about the fact street photography is pretty much fucking dead because of some stupid-ass socialistic fucking law regarding everyone owning their own image of themselves as copyright ...

dumbassphotographeronline ... completely plagiarized the french law when he "came up" with his own law to combat the paparazzi! shouldn't the dumbass learn how to make photos of things other than apples on a black background than reading a french law and plagiarizing?

fucking "experts" on the web. they're everywhere. ;)

hope your collective week is going well.

i get to travel!

cheers from the now-overcast l.a.!

p.s., the magic is in the hole ... butterfingering and triple chocolate penetration. no one got it! ;)

hi Chris!
With photos turning out like these with just the camera and talent and some knowledge.....
Photoshop becomes almost a waste of money.
Perhaps we should use use you as the eponym for the camera...
finally made some shots of the jewelry of your still open to a e-mail/with attachment.
Best to all out there(as he sits by the pool watching clouds pass over head).

damnnn - travis is dope! definitely one of my favorite drummers - i can really appreciate what he does as a drummer myself. and blink 182 was amazing. i'm glad to see he's still doing shit since they broke up. i remember my dad telling me i should team up with a dj like yearsss back but i never did - and then the travis/am thing came out and he said, "told you so" ...

i still wanna do it one day- it would be diiirty.

but i'm gunna be writing and recording some drums for a couple rap tracks since my guitarist rainer produces rap instrumentals and we've got a few friends who rap really well. it should be fun!

these photos were cool man- i like how you try to do it different. i've always really respected that. the "clean" shit is just so ... clean. ;) kinda like the digital/film thing in a clean vs. doing it different way ...

nice as always!

i've always wondered what travis was like ... i shot tom delonge a while ago and i thought he would be a huge joker since that's how he was in blink 182 but he wasn't a joker at all ...

cheers!!!!!

your dad is smart! :)

you should do it.

there has to be something for the mags to publish but ... once i know i have that i like to do something different as well.

thanks, mate.

travis is really a cool guy.

I FU-CKING- LO-VE- THO-SE PHO-TOS

concert photography and street photography is were my heart is at.

though I don't have the "proper" camera for street... will be shooting a show tonight, it's not that I don't like the band... I DISLIKE the band. The only reason the night will be bearable is because I will be shooting. Can't use flash though, the divas might get pissed. plus, I don't usually use flash...

Recently I shot a Good Charlotte show, good pics, I got thrown after only 2 songs, man I was pissed (promoters are the devil!!!!!) plus Ms. Paris never arrived, of course she didn't, she was in FUCKING TOKYO. I told my boss, he didn't care and made me wait since 4 o'clock in the morning... I stopped working at 2 o'clock next day... Got wasted afterwards... Anyway, shooting a concert... I fucking love it.

Sorry I strayed away from the topic.

Love those pics man! Travis Baker is a great drummer. Keep abusing your gear, it's worth it!
Posted by Chris on
thanks, mate!

i enjoy doing live performance stuff because it's different. i enjoy doing it when you're at the behest of the artist the most. when you're there for a publication they expect "clean shit" and i can do as much experimentation. ;)

you can shoot street with anything ... i just think it's better with a rangefinder!

i never use flash except where it's fucking way too dark and they should have known better for being so damn dark. ;)

try 30 seconds of the first song, mate. ;)

all good. feel free to stray anytime!

hope the show goes well for you!

totally worth it! ;)
Posted by rstcg on
my new editor would love the Travis pics, they're letting us experiment now, sometimes it will publish, sometimes it won't, but it's a good thing nonetheless.

the problem with street is basically, if people notice you, it's not completely natural, and as we all know, they WILL notice you if you're carrying a mark and the 70-200. plus there's the film vs digital argument...

last night was weird, we arrived late to the show, press was already in there, they didn't let me in, when the show was almost over I sneaked my camera in, and since it was a farewell tour, guess who got the "goodbye you've been a great audience" pics? so yeah, no 30 first seconds for me last night! 30 last seconds maybe ;)

that camera was abused last night, just like the celtics did with kobe.

have a great weekend! as always, keep the pics coming!

Great shots, Glad to hear you got a little "URBAN" experience down. ha ha ha! ;) Looks like it was a good time for all. Too bad I did not guess right about the doughnuts ;(!

don't know if that experience is even "a little" in the context of urban.

was fun for sure.

no one got the donuts correcT!

Funny guy with the Leica :D
I'd buy film Leica if I had enough money to buy M8, though. I think so.
Cheers, Chris.

funny for sure. rich as hell, though.

buying a film leica's the way to go! :)

nice shots. the long exposures look really cool.
the new french law just sucks. i hope that it won't become a european precedent!
Posted by Chris on
thanks, mate! didn't really know digi's could do 6 seconds!

i hope those laws don't become precedent either. it's stupid.

it was probably the hcb estate lobbying the govt to get them there in the first place.
Posted by Darren Aba... on
I, too, should step up my urban game. Well, I should just buy me some game, period.

Sweet Pix!! They (AM/Trav) were sick last week when they played LAX-LV!
That's cool that Jermaine sports the Leica.

Posted by Chris on
thanks, man! from what i hear THE show to have shot was that at LAX LV! dammit. he tried to get me to go, too! :(

jermaine sports something which hangs 'round his neck which most associate with lotsa $$$ ... that takes pictures ... not entirely un-akin to a big chain.

with a pendant with bling. ;)

I fucking love shooting drummers with long exposures.. hardly ever go over two tho! I might have experimented last night at RZA if there was a media pit, but for some reason.. no.. I was right up against the stage protecting my gear.. from the crowd, and from RZA (damn champagne)

I love how you an J teamworked the hell outta that show! one day i wanna see a set by AM, he seems like a cool guy

leather case on his M, haha.. i was wondering what that bit was... Hes probably wondering "why did i pay $5000 for this?"
Posted by Chris on
equipment first? usually, for me it's body first and then equipment. ;)

you should definitely see one of am's sets!

he didn't seem all that stoked on what he did! ;)
Posted by Obsidian-F... on
Im not quite 6ft tall, but in shoes I am so most people know to stay the fuck away.. I got slapped backhand by some stoner yelling KUUUUUUSH! BOBBY KUUUUUUSH!! (bobby digital is RZA's aka) but that was only once.. otherwise i would have gotten security on his ass.

I had myself the biggest piece of real-estate that close to the stage, enough for 3 people to stand in. i made it clear to the people behind me that if they pushed in, they might get elbowed in the nose when i put my camera up.. haha so that did it for most of the time

Posted by greenmantl... on
So love the drag shots mate! I'll be going for similar effect tomorrow night at an album launch but without any flash. I actually don't have a working flash at the moment, gotta get one before a commercial shoot next week though.

*flicks mud from base of D3* almost won a 1965 50mm F/1.2 MF lens this week. Beaten by someone who I am sure will barely use it.
Posted by Chris on
hope you get what you want tomorrow night, mate! :)

no working flash???? damn.

to be sure they'll hardly use it. rather, they'll just sit and look at it. too bad it couldn't have been in a real photographer's hands!
Posted by greenmantl... on
Tomorrow should be fun... if the client remembers to get my name on the door of that dingy dive. lol

my recent return to club shooting has me using my mobile phone instead of fill flash - big bright white screen - controlling fill via how close I hold the phone to them while I wait for the background lighting to go nuts - here's an example. http://www.greenmantle.biz/elffinarts/pic/albums/u serpics/10001/normal_MarkGreenmantlePhotography_%2 829_of_48%29.jpg

I'm going to have to get my mits on the 85 1.4 Nikkor glass till I can get the MF 1.2 as I am getting niggly at the vignette of my DX format 30 1.4 on my D3. You do realise mate, it was your influence that got me addicted to prime glass. ;P

cheers from a surprisingly temperate winter Brisbane.
Posted by Spanishjoh... on
freaky flash photography. like the m8 story and "wonder if he's liking what he's seeing" - well at no light and moving people it's always a pain. how did you know you'll need the flashes, have you been there before!? do you always take more than one flash (actually 3 + trigger) with you when you go on a shooting like this !? actually stupid questions but i just want to ask.

oh and germany won :)
Posted by Chris on
it was!

no light and moving people and not having a one-four lens..... ya' know.

yes, in fact, i've shot there many times and ... well ... i always have three flashes. flashes break. i always have backups! i always have a trigger.

never stupid questions.

germany, baby. germany. lets hope they kick russia's collective ass. ;)
Posted by Spanishjoh... on
well you know how to handle low light but when there is not light there is no light. yes, i can imagine; if you go out and shoot you always have a back up body and almost equal backup lenses, flashes and stuff. i was just wondering because of three flashes...
anyway...
germany... yaay - i hope they're kicking the spanish's asses ! :D
this will be a final, uhh. the whole country is crazy right now
Posted by Valdudes on
Amen to that, use it and abuse it, make it your little bitch, that's what the hell it's made for. My friends always feel weird that I just put the 1d III on the ground because, "it's such a nice camera." "Yeah it can handle being doused with antarctic salt water, I think it can take a little ground."

That's very cool though, never seen a drummer/DJ set. Great tripped out photos.
Posted by Chris on
make it your bitch and succumb. ;)

for the most part our gear can take it.

i've seen their set before! :) i knew what to expect.

thanks, mate! glad you liked the material.
Posted by Stevan on
it's not heavy. It's just leather... It is a bitch to change battery/card once every now and then, but it's a small price to pay in order to have spotless baby...

Yes, I am anal about the nicks. Call me crazy. I don't like it. Period. My gear still looks like new. What can I do?

I like my cameras clean.
Posted by Chris on
@spawn: you're alright with a one-four. trust me.

any way I should have my gallery updated by the end of next week because apple just emailed me to say my comp is on its way

dunno.

Hope life is treating you well otherwise.
